Hammon residents offer homes during clean up
HAMMON, OK -- Now the cleanup effort is underway in Western Oklahoma after a twister ripped through the town of Hammon Monday night. At least five homes were destroyed by the storm. Power lines are down and roofs are blown off houses. Hammon and nearby Leedey schools were closed Tuesday because they are without electricity.
Autism insurance bill, Nick's Law
OKLAHOMA CITY -- A bill that would require insurance companies to cover treatment for children with autism has cleared the House of Representatives in Missouri. However, the fight continues over similar legislation in Oklahoma, called "Nick's Law." The father of 12-year-old Nick Rohde, for whom the proposed law was named, wants Oklahoma to join surrounding states on the issue.
Saving a buck: free tax help
EDMOND, OK -- It's tax time. Getting your taxes prepared can be expensive depending on how you get them done. However, it doesn't have to be expensive and you don't have to do them yourself to save money. Reeva Robinson is one of dozens of people at The Village Library Tuesday morning. She and others came out to get free help filing taxes. It's part of a program put on by AARP called Tax-Aide.
MWC man arrested for rape
MIDWEST CITY, OK -- A Midwest City man is in trouble with the law after he allegedly attacked a woman. According to police, Joseph Degeare held his girlfriend hostage and tried to sexually assault her inside their Midwest City home. Although Degeare was just inches away from her, detectives say the victim secretly called 911 and investigators were able to track her down by pinpointing her cell phone signal.
Bible class now in public schools
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Reading, writing and religion. State Rep. Todd Russ of Cordell co-authored a bill that would allow educators to use the Bible as a teaching tool. House Bill 2321 instructs the State Board of Education to adopt curriculum for an elective course of a nonreligious study of the Bible and its influence on literature, art, music, culture and politics.
Bringing street racing to Bricktown
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Let the checkered flag drop. Leaders in Oklahoma City hope to begin street racing in Bricktown. The city council approved a proposal to bring an American Le Mans Grand Prix race to the city. The $1.8 million street track would begin on EK Gaylord, race down Reno, up to Sheridan, over the Walnut Street bridge, to Northeast 2nd and back to EK Gaylord.
Dog kills baby
PERKINS, OK -- An 8-month-old infant, Justin Lopez, has died from blunt-force trauma to head. He was attacked by a rottweiler at a rural residence, south of Perkins Monday. The incident happened in Lincoln county, on Iowa Tribal land. At the scene, the Iowa Tribe Police Chief confirmed the fatal attack.
Digital drugs, I-dosing
MUSTANG, OK -- School administrators are sending a warning to parents about a new and dangerous fad. It's called I-Dosing, or digital drugs. Kids are downloading music and tones that supposedly alter brain waves. The Web sites claim users can experience everything from euphoria to sedation.
